Our Criteria
We don't just pull a list of names and call it a day. Every fund on here had to clear a specific bar before it made the cut:
- Black-led, verified at the leadership level. We started with Crunchbase's Diversity Spotlight tag for "Black Led," which specifically means the firm's managing partners identify as Black or African American.
- Venture Capital investor type, US-based. We kept this list focused on VC firms (not angel groups or accelerators) headquartered in the United States, since that's where most of the founders we talk to are raising.
- 10 or more investments made. Below that, it's hard to tell if a fund is actively deploying or made a couple of checks years ago and went quiet. This threshold filters for funds with an actual track record.
- At least one investment announced since January 2026. Total investment count alone rewards longevity, not current activity. This filter catches funds that are still writing checks now, not just ones that were active a few years back.

That last filter matters most. A fund with an impressive track record from 2018 doesn't help you if it's gone quiet since.

Who are the top Black venture capitalists?
There isn't one definitive ranking since firm size, check size, and stage focus all vary a lot, but the most active Black-led funds by volume of investments include Precursor Ventures, Kapor Capital, MaC Venture Capital, and 645 Ventures. Please remember that volume isn't everything though. A founder raising a $500K pre-seed round is better served by a fund like Precursor or Collide Capital than by a firm writing much larger, later-stage checks.
What's the difference between Black-founded and Black-led?
Black-founded usually reflects the demographics of the firm's founding team, and not necessarily the existing investment management team. Black-led describes the latter: the firm's managing partners, the people typically deciding where the fund's money gets allocated, are Black. A fund can be both, one, or neither.
Are there Black-led VC funds outside the US?
Yes, though this list focuses specifically on US-based funds since that's where most of our founder network is raising. CRE Venture Capital is a notable exception here; they invest across Africa from a US base.
How do I know if a Black-led fund invests at my stage?
Check the 'Top Verticals' column above along with the fund's own site. Most of these firms focus on pre-seed through Series A, so if you're raising a later-stage or secondary round, you'll want to look beyond this list or confirm directly with each fund before reaching out.
